Vote and Die 2008

Updated: June 05, 2008

The Facebook group is called “15,000,000 for Lower Gas” and it is making a difference, despite having nowhere near 15,000,000 members.

As the price of oil rises to dizzying heights and the vice grip of foreign oil cartels tightens on the wallets of automobile owners nationwide, more and more citizens recognize the situation for what it is; grim. The auto industry is in dire straights because hundreds of billions of American consumers are seeking out alternative forms of transportation, such as feet.

But not everyone is rolling over just yet. Jason Mazuk of Nashville, TN is fighting against “the man” and “evil oil” with his Facebook group “15,000,000 for lower gas prices”.

Currently the group has over 900,000 members. I'm not a mathematician or doctor, but I don't think that is anywhere near 15 million.

What the group lacks in quantity, it makes up for with content as it is more than clear that some of the members of this internet social networking site are really serious about the cause. Justin Amenta of Fitchburg  posted the comment, “Something needs to be done…Our generation sucks. If this were the 60s-70s, protests and other crazy shit would be going on.”

Jason, you are absolutely correct. Our generation does suck. Because everyone knows there has never been issues with gas in American history, especially not in the 70s, and we should stop being so apathetic to the cause. Facebook is the answer.

While everyone in the group is in agreement that gas should be cheaper, there does seem to be turmoil within the group.

Hannah of Liberty College, has aired her dirty laundry with her post, “ok emma—1 you started the personal attacks. Read back what you wrote… two, read my last post. Daddy doesn’t pay me anything…3 I research from school…not from what daddy tells me.”

Ow, snap.  Please Hannah, lets stay focused here. “15,000,000 for Lower Gas” is about expressing your anger and or concern about saving some money at the pump, not as a public forum to expressing your father's disinterest in your life. Daddy issues – what up?

Aside from these two posts, the group wall displays comments that vary from protecting the U.S. governments lack of lessening the financial hurt of gas to people advocating the destruction of  “greedy gas companies”.

Everyone knows joining Facebook groups changes social issues almost immediately. Look at Darfur – problem solved. Everyone accepts homosexuals now, the conflict in Iraq is resolved, Hillary Clinton is on the ballot, and awareness of 90s culture is at an all time high. Facebook is the change we seek.

Of course, other things can be done to change public issues such as price of gasoline. We can lessen our dependence on auto transportation, shop locally, ride bikes. But that shit sounds hard and public transportation smells like homeless people. And the only people who ride bikes are virgins and losers. Are you a virgin loser? Hell no. So sign on and join away, your reputation depends on it. Make the change you wish to see in the world by bitching about it on a wall post between adding pictures from last night's Anything But Clothes fiasco and poking Steve Urkel.
